We did eat some tag soup this year the wife and I. The first two pics are the buck we were after. Saw him last year also but he got a lot bigger this year. We bow hunted quite a bit and never even saw him had a lot of pictures right up until he lost his velvet and then he was gone. Rifle hunting we thought for sure we would at least see him, but opening weekend on Sunday I got a picture sent of that buck to my phone and it wasn't from my wife! But the neighbor about 100 yds. Across the fence. He was about 150 I think, was tough to break the news as she wanted that buck really bad. I don't have a picture of him hard horned I got a different phone too so lost the kill photo. Other to pictures are from the same place my dad's farm , but this year he decided to quit farming and sold it!! Needless to say I couldn't afford to buy any.

I had a great season though I didn't get one of the two elk I was after. I had quite a few opportunities to take smaller bulls but knew what I wanted. 2013 was my 20th archery elk season and tagging one of the two I wanted would have been a bonus. I went solo in 2013 and enjoyed every minute while I was in the high country. It was steep and way back off the beaten path just the way I like it. One day I will get around to editing some of the video diary I did from 2013 and share it. It was the first time in those 20 seasons that I had a very close encounter with a Mt Lion. It was exciting but a little on the scarey side since I was solo. So tag soup it was for the Elk but did very well on the whitetails for 2013. Mark

This is a great thread MM
Thanks IKIC! Im really enjoying these stories and pics too! This is the stuff that keeps us going out and hunting every year! I was just thinking this could also include scouting trips and stories from past years too. Any positive hunting related experience that you didnt punch your tag on is welcome!

This was the first year since 1997 that I didn't kill a buck in my general zone here in CA. After killing my CA X zone buck I got pretty selective around home and just never saw anything I wanted to shoot. I still had a blast hunting around here though. I was with two of my friends David and Zach when they killed there bucks this last year on the same day. (Zach's buck wash his 1st ever) I was also with my best friend when he killed his buck on the last day of the season and it was the only day we were able to hunt together last year. Since we usually hunt 20+ days together in a season this one was extra special for us. Tac on quite a few days hunting with my dad and five year old daughter and the season was just about perfect. Bring on next season!!!

By the way great thread MM!

I got tag soup on a public land over the counter Northern Idaho elk tag hunting a new area that I'd never been to. I learned a lot about the area though and had a fun time meeting up with friends that I don't see that often as they live out in different states. I heard elk bulging close and in multiple areas, but never connected with the bulls. I saw some awesome new country. On a good note, it all motivated me to get in better shape. I've dropped a bunch of weight since that October 2013 and have not missed a workout during the work week at the gym.

Tag soup is not all that bad. There is typically a positive way to look at it, and learn from it but a bit of protein in that soup would have sure tasted good too.

Thanks for the story Kevin and nice to see some more of your amazing pics!! That country looks kinda familiar to me but I think its south of most of the places I have hunted in Idaho.

Here are some pics from a CO ML hunt a few years ago. I went home with a tag in my pocket but it is one of my most my most memorable hunts in the most beautiful country I have ever been in! I have decided not to hunt this unit again but I hope to go back and hike it again someday!
