Hi Guys I was out voted and my group is now heading to Colorado in November (i voted Montana again). The plan is to go to the Sweetwater lake area which I think is unit 25 . Can anyone share some pointers with this fairly green hunter about what to expect in this area ? I don't mind doing some walking/hiking but I work to much to be in Cam Hanes condition lol . What kind of pressure is up there how busy is it up there . Do we need to be especially concerned about bears . Is there jeep trails that would help get my out of shape butt up into the hills to decent trail heads or hunting grounds that could then be hiked and hunted . Thanks guys

I haven't hunted the area directly around Sweetwater Lake, but have spent several years hunting the surrounding area in the Flat Tops Wilderness. My experience has been that there are a lot of elk and deer in the area, but the hunting pressure is also corrospodingly high. Several outfitters make their living in the Flat Tops, which is good and bad. Good, because it proves animals are there, bad because it means more hunters.

We saw elk and deer everywhere in the Flat Tops area from 1/2 mile from a major forest service road to several miles into the wilderness. The deer were there, that's for sure, but they were never consistent for us. They just seemed to be randomly scattered everywhere and it was more dumb luck that you would run into one, than hunting prowess.

The scenery in that area is breathtaking and epitomizes that of an idyllic western hunt. You won't be disappointed with the environment, that's for sure. As for the deer (or elk), all I can say is good luck.
