Starting over Again

Hi everyone, as my handle says, I was/still am an archer at heart from western PA. I shot competitive 3D archery in the 90s and into the early 2000s successfully at the national level. I was fortunate enough to meet some swell fellas (who all seemed to be from AZ) and was ridiculously lucky in drawing an AZ NR bull elk tag in 6A with 2 bonus points way back in 1999. Greatest week of my life hunting by a huge margin and we totally DIYed it. It was just so awesome.

Then life/kids came along and it just became impossible to do everything. I closed my archery shop and eventually dropped off the 3D circuit. I also happened to meet some good guys from IA and have been hunting IA archery whitetail deer every couple/few years but now in my early 50s, I realize the time to plot out some western hunting is now (actually, I am late, but better late than never). So here I am.

I am ready to start the process again. Unfortunately, I don't have a hunting partner as of yet, my old partner and I have parted ways. So I am gonna start here on my own and see if I can turn up a partner. My goal is to begin to come west for either a mulie or elk with some regularity, rifle or archery, and work it in with my IA whitetail hunting. My area in PA is so overpressured for whitetail it's discouraging to even think about going out. 750,000+ hunters in a 44,000 sq mile state does that. Looking forward to getting back out west. All states are in play if the right opportunity comes along.

Welcome to the forum 3darcher2. I live in Southcentral PA. Totally agree with you regarding our deer situation. We need to have a draw system for our deer tags in my honest opinion. Anyways welcome aboard.

Thanks everyone!

I got pretty deep into planning a CO bowhunt about 8 years ago for mulies but it never materialized. I am thinking WY deer this time around. I actually picked up an OTC bow tag for mulies in AZ on that elk trip and got drawn but never got a shot off. I'd really like a stab at a mulie, I have some unfinished business. Maybe rifle 2017? 2016 will be an IA bowhunt for whitetails. I can grab a point this fall and get a tag in 2017 somewhere. Thinking I might make a week vacation with my wife this summer just to scope everything out.

WyoHart, I am trapped in the former 4 point on a side land, now 3 high on a side. It's damn near impossible to count points on a moving deer here. I passed up some bucks I was sure that were big enough but couldn't see a brow. Even now, two years ago I had the buck I had been hunting for show up - broken rack and illegal. Big dominant buck.

Worst part is the mentor tag made things ripe for abuse. Guys on the next farm over shoot every buck they can see and haul them out with mentor tags on them. It's been a plan that's failed me miserably. I'd rather bowhunt one day in Iowa than a whole season in PA.

I feel for ya. I'm in a three point unit and it is still tough. My father has left some go that he was sure of. That being said, we have been very fortunate to harvest buck consistently with the antler restrictions. Since the introduction, I don't think that we have had a fall go by that at least one of us didn't get one, if not both. The bucks are definitely a lot bigger than what he's had on the wall before 2002. I've killed some small ones with my bow the past 4 years, but am just as glad as if they were monsters. Our success comes with being out as much as we can and making our own luck. The herd reduction has totally killed deer hunting here and I don't know if we'll ever get it back. I don't see much in the way of mentor hunting, but I'm sure it has opened up a new twist of ways for people to shoot deer.

Slugz, I grew up in Fawn Township, moved to Sarver, now back in Fawn. I might just take you up on that...not really sure where to head at this point. I've looked mostly at WY and will definitely buy some points for there but I am going to go back and review that CO stuff again. MT looks good, and so did NM the last time I looked at it for elk. Heck, it all looks good.

Right now I think I'd like to get into a mule deer hunt in the mountains somewhere. Just looking for a decent looking buck and feel my way around somewhere.

When you have no place in particular in mind and nothing pulling you to any one place in particular, there is sooooo much information out there it's overwhelming. Sometimes I think, "Geez, I just want to see a couple deer and get a chance at a buck", but the planning is half the fun.
