My name is jared, and i am starting to plan a western mule deer hunt. this is the first stop for me. I have been on this site for alittle of a year now because i started antolope hunting in eastern wy and have had great sucsess do to the great information i have recieved from all the great people on this site/forum. I know nothing to when it come to hunting mule deer. i am not affaird to do hard work to get one or do alot of research to get us in a great place to harvest a great muley. so I guess where i would like to start is where would you suggest a great place to go is. looking for state, unit, and hunting pressure. thanks for helping me get started for a 2014 muley hunt.

we have nothing maybe looking for an over the counter do it yourself hunt. but very willing to apply for a draw tag.
just looking for a little info on any state that has muleys(wyoming/idaho/montana/colorado). which has over the counter and which is draw. looking for pros and cons on any state.

Wyoming is a draw for deer for non-residents BUT in some areas there are left over tags that you can buy after the initial drawing. The bighorn mountains hold some decent mule deer here outside of sheridan. There are a lot of deer but not a whole lot of trophy quality up there. I have seen a few bucks going into the 180s but not many and usually only 1-2 a year. There are wolves,mountain lions and black bears but no grizzlies so that's a bonus!

I've applied for deer in nearly every western state for the past 20 years. Without points the choice is easy, go to Eastern Montana. It's pretty easy to have a high success hunt with for a nice representative 4 x 4 muley buck.
1. Get a buck tag for Montana. I believe there have been leftover tags the past couple years.
2. Find a ranch that is in the eastern part of Montana that is enrolled in the Block Management program. You can find out who is enrolled from the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Call a few ranchers and talk to them. This opportunity to hunt private land is free.
3. Plan to hunt the last three weeks of November. The closer to Thanksgiving the better to time with the peak of the rut.
You should be able to kill a 150 class buck on a good ranch.

thanx Umpqua i will look into eastern montana. yea im not looking 200 incher but a nice 150 would be great to start with
