I joined this forum a few months ago upon drawing a WY Unit 24 Elk tag and immediately requested info about my hunt. I soon discovered that approach wasn't appreciated by some. Soooo, I'd like to start over. My name is Larry, I just turned 67, retired and I'm an avid hunter. I live and have lived most of my life in northern CA on the coast near the Oregon border. I like to refer to where I live as the "real" northern CA. I didn't have much opportunity to hunt when I was young for various reasons but, started self teaching myself [I had some help] in my mid thirties. Started out mostly bow and rifle hunting Blacktails locally. For the last 18 or so years I've been applying for and hunting limited draw hunts in most of the western states as well as some in the midwest. Hunting everything from bighorn sheep to feral hogs. I hunt mostly D.I.Y. on public land [even in the midwest] mainly because I can not afford to hunt as much as I do if I have to pay for trespass on private land or pay for a guide [I was gone 6 months in 2012, hunting 5 different states, for 8 animals{didn't get them all}][did I mention I'm retired and I like to hunt?]. I'm not a vegetarian either, nor are my friends. I may not always get a book animal but, I'm satisfied knowing what I harvest, if I do, I do mostly on my own. I like to think that my mental game is good but, I have to admit, I wish I still had a younger body to go along with it. Good luck on your draws/hunts this year and remember "it's good to be lucky but, the harder/smarter you hunt, the luckier you will be". Stay healthy!
