Squeeze The Trigger...and Pop!

A couple of weeks ago while antelope hunting in Wyoming, had something happen that happens to every reloader....eventually.

I was setup on a doe at about 200 yards, head down feeding. Squeezed the trigger and just a pop. Jacked out the round and tried to chamber another....no go, couldn't close bolt. Looked down the barrel, no light. Then I knew I had a bullet stuck in the throat of the chamber. Went back to camp and got out a cleaning rod and a mallet and drove the bullet out after I squirted some WD40 down the barrel for lubricant. Destroyed the cleaning rod in the process.

My point is this:

I've been reloading for over 50 years and this is the first rifle round that I neglected to put powder in during the reloading sequence. I am very meticulous in my reloading, weighing every powder charge to the tenth of a grain. I reloaded these rounds maybe 5 years ago, so nothing is there memory wise. The only thing I could come up with is maybe I got interrupted or a phone call, something that would interrupt my loading sequence and I forgot where I was and missed a powder charge. I checked the other 300 or so rounds I have and found no others that had any problems.

Bottom line....DoDo happens eventually. I guess I have reloaded maybe 100,000 rounds and have never had this problem. Take heed my friends. I did fill that tag later in the day.

Been there done that except mine was a real light and I mean real light squib load to fire form a case on my .357 Herrett. After I pulled the trigger I got a sick feeling in my stomach since I knew exactly what I had done.

After that one I shot full powder charges in all of my reloads.

Been reloading since 1973. Had it happen one time. On my 41 mag. no powder. bullet half in cylinder and half in chamber. I reload exactly like CC described and I also don't know what happened, but it did.

Man that stinks!

At least you didnt do what 75% of people would do in the heat of battle and thats chamber another round and pull the trigger...

Personally, I have a standard rule of thumb that I have lived by.

Never reload for big game or turkeys.

Its a personal decision.

I am not meticulous and I have the attention span of a gnat so I'm not betting any hunt on something I reloaded haha

Except for crows and doves. I'm ok with a misfire on them. :)

That is where they say to get into a flow and not to let that flow get interrupted as you are reloading. I used to charge 50 rounds before I started to seat the bullets, now I seat the bullet right after I dump the charge into the case if I am measuring every one. On pistol rounds I seat the bullet right after I throw the charge from the powder measure but I always look into the case mouth to make sure of the powder charge.

Remember you are making bombs when you are reloading.

Glad that’s all it was. When I read the thread title I figured I was going to see a blown up gun in your hands.

That?s still a heck of a track record. In 50 years of reloading a few cartridges have gone by!

I have often thought of packing a 1/4" brass rod the length of my rifle barrel plus a couple inches just as a in case I need it but have never followed up on it. That 1/4" rod could be used on all the calibers from .25 on up to knock something out of it and even as a cleaning rod.

Thanks for sharing CC. If that happened to an expert reloader like yourself it could happen to any of us.

You probably just got distracted when you stopped to check your Facebook or Instagram account ...

Thanks for sharing, I have not had that happen yet but with time I am sure that or something like will. I don't trust myself that much so I have gotten into the habit of shaking each round next to my ear to hear the powder before I put them away.
