I'm looking at taking my son on a 3 to 4 day turkey hunt in the Blackhills was looking around the jewel cave area, does anyone know if there is a good population in that area? Or maybe just a different general area? Where only looking at one tag more of the get away and enjoy time together than a must fill tags thing, just would like to be around birds at least. Appreciate any input.

I used to see good numbers just north of there on the east side of the short pine hills near Buffalo. There is some public land west of the road than runs north from BelleFouche. It has been a few years since I was in that country. If you strike out elsewhere, may be worth checking on.

send me a pm. ill be out scouting the hills in March and can point you in the right direction. If you are looking for somewhere to stay I would try to do it centrally around Keystone or Hill City. You have options on where to drive from both places and the hotels should be in winter rates.

I dodge them on the road regularly and I live just south of the black hills. Not sure about that area but if you decide to look south I can probably help with some public land spots and even some private land access.
