Today was the opener for youth deer in South Dakota. Temps were in the mid 30's when we made our way up to the black hills. Luck was on our side as a group of does was feeding at the forest service trailhead we normally park at. Less than an hour into the season and my 12 year old was already tagged out. We spent the rest of the day checking cameras, looking for mule deer, and thinning out some coyotes. Was a great day in the woods with my oldest boys.

Congrats.

I went out last weekend in Eastern South Dakota with my nephew. We got 5 yards from our spot I wanted to sit and there was already a doe coming down the tree line 30 yards from us. It was a little too dark and there was a bush in the way so no shot was allowed but she stomped and snort wheezed at us for a couple minutes while we both froze in our tracks. She ran back into the trees and I told my nephew she would be back and no less than 5 minutes later (she wanted to get back to the corn), she came right back along the same path and steps out into the alfalfa 40 yards away. I tell him if he feels OK go ahead and pull the trigger. We called his Mom before she got out of bed and drove around for an hour spotting several other small bucks before we went back and took pictures and field dressed her. I even told him about the first encounter with my buck bow hunting and how I thought I was going to fall out of the tree I was shaking so bad when he was under me. I think I gave him a little dose of that buck fever we all suffer from.
