Hello, I am new to here I drew a late season cow tag for the north part of h2 Are there any other South Dakota guys here, or anybody with experience hunting the h2 unit in the black hills? I'm just looking for some places to start looking for elk, I'm not asking for secret spots or gps coordinates.. lol. Due to my distance away from the hills, my job and kids I do not have time to go pre-scout. Thanks!

Horsenhike, thanks for the reply I appreciate it! Season is dec 1-15. We will hunt the 6-10 and then if no luck hopefully make it back out the last two days of season.

I was out in south H2 last weekend and didn't see any, but I wasn't looking hard either. Lots of deer hunters around and they had an effect on everything. I'd be looking for an elk west of Rochford if I was you. Flag Mountain, Whitetail Peak, somewhere in there would be a good start. Looks like the weather will turn favorable for you.

Call the Conservation officers, there are certainly landowners who'd love to see a cow leaving in your pickup instead of raiding their haystack.

PS If you see any ruffed grouse, drop me a note?

Brett, thanks for the info. I will def let you know if I see any ruffed grouse. I honestly didn't know we had them in SD, I shot many while living in Montana.

Snow in the hills last night and today. Guys are seeing small groups so far at all elevations. The cold might push them down to the meadows soon. I work tomorrow but have wed and thurs off. Will let you know more soon.

Thanks rcfireninja, the whole state must have got hit with snow. Do you think the snow will be all gone by the weekend, and if so the elk shouldn't be to affected by it then right? Not sure how much snow you got down there. Thanks

The temps should stay low enough with wind chill to keep the snow around. The hills had a couple inches in places. I will know more after tomorrow. When do you plan on getting out here?

Hey guys we were able to spot some this morning and fill my father in law's tag after a LONG stalk. Question, how far will the remaining 6-8 elk on that herd move away from there? It was a one shot kill they never knew we were there. Just wondering if it would be worth it to hike back up there in the morning cause there are lots of glassing spots up top. Or do we look for another group? They not visible from any roads. Thanks!

Get elevation and glass. They may not go far in elk terms, but that could be a couple miles.

Post pics!
