Some mule deer I have been fortunate enough to take.

I cannot wait until hunting season again. I drew a 291 buck tag for east of where I live roughly 50 miles. My buddy took one there a couple years ago that was a dandy. Maybe I will be as lucky. These are a few I have been lucky enough to take. I need to get out bear and turkey hunting some more to get my fix it would appear! I just love being out in the hills. My son Jeff's first buck with his 6mm Remington. Proudest of this one!

Buddies central Montana deer.

10+ year old western Montana buck. He was really good eating if you can believe it! Essentially a heavy 2x2 although he technically had 3x4 per side. A friend step father, shown, got this nice deer the same day.

Obviously a whitetail and the largest I have ever gotten. He was skinned, legs cut off at the first joint, neck cut off in front of the shoulder, and had hung for four days. When I weighed the bare bones carcass ready to cut up, it still weighed an amazing 155 pounds on a scales! He was huge. Western Montana

My wife has taken a couple of nice deer also. Sure wish she would go with me more.

No he's not huge, but pretty cool. MY father shot him and this buck had no testicles. He was really in great shape. His horns were in velvet and were soft. When my dad shot, before the buck hit the ground, one of his antlers popped off just up from the burr and went flying in the air after the shot. His head had snapped around before he fell. My father is holding the horn in place for the picture.

I have had good mule deer venison, and not so good. The buck from this year was harvested (there ya go edelweiss ) on Sep. 15th, and was probably the best tasting one I have had. He was pretty old, too. My thinking is that getting them before the rut does helps the flavor.

Yes it does! Especially on mule deer, but not so much on whitetails. I'm not quite sure why on that one, but they just don't seem to get as strong tasting or stinky. Way back when my dad was a young kid and they survived a lot on wild game, he would say that grandpa would say they are the best about mid-July when they have had a chance to fatten up really nice.

BB forgot to add, yes that was a dandy buck you got this year in some beautiful country too I might add.
