So I did not draw any elk tags or permits. What to do?

This is the first year in maybe the last 6 or so that I did not draw a NR elk license/permit/tag. Being out of practice as to the strategy moving forward for OTC, secondary draws, alternate draws, etc., I am looking for recommendations. I know about CO OTC and MT alternates list, but am looking for other advice/recommendations. Would consider guided but only as a last resort.

Thanks

(Just a little humor-I bet some of the members will have ideas-CO OTC or CO leftovers is prob where I would start)

I second the CO leftover list. There are still some options in Idaho also. There are a few MT elk combos that will go on sale here in a few days, they'll probably sell fast.

BTW, how did your hunt in 2017 go?

so you said there will be a few MT elk combo licenses going on sale. I thought MT leftovers/returns were put into a drawing for which applications are being accepted between May 15 and June 30. As I understand it, the drawing is to establish a list and as licenses become available, MT FWP will go down the list one by one until all returned licenses are resold. Is that what you are referring to when you say they will go on sale?

Ended up not doing the WY hunt in 2017. Went general license in MT and which ended up a minor disaster with weather.
I would love to hear the story to pass the time. Perhaps others can learn from your experience or at least share in your misery.

There are several hundred of the Montana elk tags being returned that will be available soon. I saw something about it on hunt talk.

Guess a lot of guys draw the combo and return the elk portion.

I'd gladly go hunt Montna with a general tag. I wouldn't take a free Colorado OTC tag and I live 20 miles from the border.

If I really wanted to hunt elk I would forget the leftover list and just purchase a OTC tag. Either archery or rifle, there are plenty of them.

However even with the left over list be prepared for disappointment and tag soup if you don't know the area or have time to scout it.

Okay, here's the story. First week of November. Tuesday November 7th if I remember right. We drove up Cottonwood Creek Road from the north end of the Crazies. Forecast was for 3 inches of snow in the valley (~6000 feet) overnight. We were planning on camping at 7000 feet so felt real good about the hunt. We set up camp just before dark, with no snow on the ground. We woke up to a foot and a half and it was still hammering. Packed everything not nailed down into the truck and eased down the mountain road. Left tent, 4 wheeler and trailer behind. The snow was above the axle on the trailer. We figured give it a few days for the snow to consolidate and go back up and retrieve our gear. Except in the next 2 days, another 2 feet of snow fell. We hunted block management ranches all week and never got a chance to go back up. The gear spent the winter on the mountain. Retrieved it in June of 2108. There is way more to the story but that's the long and short of it.

WOW. Glad you were able to get out of there in time.
Did anyone fill a tag down below?

So were you able to snag one of the MT tags? Decide to go a different route?

So whats this"vendor" you speak of swampokie? vendor of landowner tags for sale to the public? or are there actually vendors who buy and sell the tags off the leftover list?

He is talking about licensing vendors or where you can just walk in and buy a hunting or fishing license. They have a terminal that is connected right into the CP&W server. They are all over the state including any CP&W office along with any State Park.
