Slowing down the training...

Does anyone tend to slow down the more strenuous training a few weeks out from the season? I normally still do everything I normally do but just go a little lighter on the weights. Pack outs still at 70lbs. What is everyone's thoughts.

I slow down during season but still try to get some strength training in at a minimum. The way I look at it is is that all my conditioning training is for the hunt, so when in the field I am doing my conditioning. Plus the break is much needed for recovery too. I also try not to go more than a couple weeks without getting back into the gym.

So to answer your question, I use hunting season as my time to break up workouts and take various recovery breaks. My nutrition typically suffers more than anything though.

I go to what I like to call "active rest" the week prior to my hunt. In essence, going through the motions with less resistance/strain in an effort to allow the body to recover. It's good to do this every 6-12 weeks depending on body part.

Usually I will have an event like a race 2 weeks before my Big Hunt of the year. Gives me plenty of time to recover.

MTA: I think "tapering" from a running sense and a "light weight/higher reps" on the weights makes sense for the 2 weeks prior to a big hunt. Keep things free and moving. More stretching, shorter distances (long runs at 1/2 of peak distance), less explosive exercises. Maybe hike with hunting pack loaded and weapon if possible instead of a long run.

I am leaning towards pairing the workouts down some two weeks out like mentioned by most. I do think it does your body good to lighten up the workouts some.

In striving to be at our peak when the season starts, it's probably more important to ensure that you avoid injuries. I would rather be at 90% and healthy, than hit 99% when something pulls, breaks, or strains to keep you off the mountain entirely.

I'm going to slow down starting August 1st, and concentrate more on walking more with my pack. I will lighten up on the weights to. More time at the range.

I haven't started to slow down yet. I am Just about peaking out right now. I will let up a little about 1-2 weeks out. Feeling really good and confidant right now. All my gear is ready except for my meal packs.
