Are the non-Merino base layers put out by Sitka (other companies make similar products too, I believe) essentially the same thing (function similarly, similar weight, more moisture management than insulation) as Under Armor? I'm looking at the Sitka Core line -- they've been on Camofire a lot lately.

I would say, slightly different, but I prefer merino as a first layer, but I would take my 4.0 over my core Sitka if I was going to put it next to skin ( for warmth). Wicking wise, really similar.

I agree with Hoytfanatic - I use the merino from Sitka as my base layer and it is great. I start out in the morning with only merino on top and hike up the hills, then add the traverse when I slow down to hunt and need insulation from a breeze. The merino is also cool on a hot afternoon stalk or sitting by a wallow. The only bad thing is it is not mosquito proof, so hope for some early freezes to knock out the bugs, they will drill right through it. Here is a photo of my #1 piece - the merino wool zip T - great for layer or hunting in the heat.

Thanks to both of you. I have a little of each (merino/synthetic) and prefer the merino, but don't mind the other, and was seeing some good prices on the Sitka synthetic, so it got me thinking.

The new Sitka Core is really comfortable. They definitely made it more soft and nice to wear.

well I found the Merino series, considerable price jump over the synthetic series. I suppose one set of core gear could get one thru a week - 7 days of hunting before getting to ripe.
