For all of you who are like me and already wishing it was September, here is a video that I meant to put up of my elk from last year. I know I had aready have a photo of him on here, but the video reminds me of how happy I was when I first put my hands on him. He was a satellite bull that came in while I was calling to the herd bull in dark tember. If you turn your volume up, you can even hear the herd bull still bugling at one point in the video. Everytime I wonder why I am going out to run, I watch the video and remind myself of how much I love to hunt out west.

Nice job !! I love seeing stuff like that - prop up the camera and make some memories, thanks for sharing.

I had a day in the mountains last year when the bulls were on fire. I watched a herd of about 50 with a big herd bull and maybe 5 satellite bulls all screaming in this open bowl just at timberline. Then a herd of about 75 elk came over a high saddle and into the same bowl. That herd had a larger herd bull and a bunch of bugling satellite bulls. I was sitting about 1,000 yards away waiting for the mid day thermals to change so I could get below them in the timber near their water source for a night hunt. I watched from the sidehill above them as these two bulls went at it. The smaller herd bull (320) beat the bull that came over the saddle. The saddle bull then went and laid down about 400 yards off and took a nap - he was super tired from his hike over the saddle and the battle with the other bull. After about 3 hours of napping the big bull got up, raked a tree for a while and went into that other herd bull and kicked his trash. It was amazing to see the action and watch satellite bulls trying to breed the cows, while the big boys were fighting.

As the thermals switched I began to get below the elk and then saw a hunter in the draw below me cut me off on his way to this herd. We were 4 miles from the truck, so I just headed out. At the trail head I talked to the kid and he had no idea I was in there and apologized for messing up my hunt that I had waited all day for. He was a nice guy and we had a good visit. I remember going home that night and laying in bed, my ears were ringing with elk bugles I had been to an Elk Rock Concert. Looking forward to more of those sights and sounds this fall.
