Gents,

Looking for some advice. My dad, brother, and I have an old pop-up camper but we plan on buying a canvas style (or Cabela's Alaknak) tent for our western hunts as they are typically DIY base camp hunts that we can drive up to. Plus we have two criteria, holds up in the wind and can have a stove for heat and drying. Now, my brother got draw for an AZ rifle elk hunt on late Nov. and its looking like we are going to backpack in a couple nights to try and get away from the roads.

Does anyone have experience with Kirafu Tipis? They are extremely light and have the capability for a 3-4 lbs titanium stove. Looks like an option we could use as a base camp or backpack in 2-3 miles.

Any other ideas are openly welcomed!

I had an 8 man Kifaru tipi until yesterday. I just shipped it out to another forum member who will be able to make more use of it than I did. It worked great with the SS stove for a three man elk trip in CO several years ago. We had a couple horses to pack in, and I wouldn't really consider it as a back pack item at 7# tent, 1# pole, 5# stove plus it would likely fill a mid-sized pack. I would be comfortable spending the winter in one, and it would not be a bad load on a pulk sled for winter camping. Don't be misled by the 6 man, or 8 man label, as that is just what would fit in the footprint. Without the stove, figure on half the number, and with the stove, 2 in the 6 man and 3 in the 8 man. If you are planning to stay in one spot for a while, it may be worth considering.

my 4 man tipi is a great backpack set up for 2 people. not big enough for 3 people. and to much for one. I got mine in 2007 and have really enjoyed it.
