Years ago I was in favor of a preference point system for deer, elk and antelope, but have since changed my mind. Areas with difficult draw odds will become impossible to draw because everybody and their sister will buy points so as to not get left behind like so many currently are in the sheep and moose draws. If a point system is implemented it should be mandatory that you apply for a tag in order to get a point and also that you must apply for a tag at least every other year in order to retain your points. Simply buying and accumulating points should not be an option. This would weed out those that are not seriously interested in drawing a particular limited quota area.

When Colorado switched to preference points for deer there was a lot of folks who did not want it and said it would ruin their chance at a tag, end deer hunting, ect. Most would now say the change was for the better as that cant be denied.

The deer as well as deer hunting has benefited greatly from preference points here in colorado and I cant imagine what some of the units would turn into especially for deer if they took residents a point or 2..

I dont know the specifics but something to think about is I would say 9 out of 10 hunters who saw the OTC deer days and now in colorado would say the pp system and draw is worth it.

Personally, I think many residents are ready to see many of the OTC hunts turn into draw units.

As a former long time resident and now non-resident I am in favor of this. The main benefit for me is I can now plan hunts with my resident friends in limited quota areas. Before I could save points to the point I was guaranteed to draw but they would have no way of doing the same. They would put in every year and still only draw the area as frequently as I did, just usually not in the same year I did. If this passes, we will be able to hunt together in these limited quota areas on a regular basis. I for one really hope this passes...

I would disagree the the Pref. Point system is what has helped the deer in CO but rather just the limited quotas which can be accomplished without a PP system. The PP system does OK for those that got in early in that most times they'll be able to draw a great unit at least once assuming they are not at the end of their hunting life. However I think it does impact newer hunters far greater. If a hunter is just starting to build pts in CO, they are looking at building points for at least 20 years or probably more to ever have a chance to draw one of the top units so many will never start the game. So if the system gave people some chance like WY or UT or NV to name a few, more people would play. I think it kind of a difference in hunting for trophy class animals vs just enjoying a great time in the outdoors and a trophy animal is secondary. Human nature drives many of us to play the game even if we understand we only have a 1% chance (or in the case of lottery extremely stupid odds!). At any rate, I don't think any State has the perfect answer and they all have their pro's and con's but if I were a WY resident, I'd rather have the random system than a PP system. Just my opinion!

Just use a bonus point system where your name goes into the hat 1 more time for every year you don't draw. Everyone has a chance and people who consistently apply have a slightly better chance. No one would be guaranteed a tag but no one would be left out of having a small chance, even years down the road. True preference point system don't work after 15-20 years.

They're usually a little behind on posting the committee votes on the website. People can listen to streaming of the meetings or might have heard from someone who attended the meeting.

yep. If this passes I may get to hunt something with antlers after all. Just need to get a paper route or something so I can afford the license.

Maybe we could split a route between Bend and PDX, meet in the middle, turn around and go home, take about that to pay the tariff I suspect. Detroit sounds about right, maybe even fish a bit to mentally prepare for the next days run...
