Sendero for $700?

My buddy is trying to get me to buy his 300 weatherby sendero for $700. He says his dad put $400 into it at the smith in accurizing, im assuming that means the action has been trued and timed free float and maybe bedded. Scheels said they would give him $800 in a trade in for the gun he wants (savage lrh 338 lapua)
Is this a sweet deal? He really wants me to buy it because it does have some sentimental value and hed rather me have it then turning it loose to who ever buys it from scheels. He even went as far as saying I can pay him a hundred bucks a month for 7 months. It comes with a nikon buckmaster scope, nothing stellar but it holds zero. Only complaints about it is its heavier than hell, and I was really looking forward to building my 270 in a few months. What are your thoughts? I know nothing about these guns.

I would expect Scheels figures they can sell it for more then 800. It really comes down to if you like/want the gun or not.

Well, I don't think he asked your opinion on his 270 project. Sounds like you like the 270 so stick with it man! 270 is a great caliber, will do you well in MT and there's a reason O'Connor used it for 40 plus years. 270 must be to small for alaskan manly men lol.

That is a good price on a Sendero, which is a great rifle. I have one in 300 RUM. I would see if you could scope the bore. If that checks out, grab it up.

Edelweiss is right about the $700 being a good price for the action and stock alone. Of course "accurizing" could have botched any one or more of the components, depending on if it was done well or not.

Yah apparently lol funny thing is he recommended a 264 win which is hardly any different than a 270 in a standard length barrel and at moderate ranges...

The rifle is very clean and he offered to have us take it to a smith and have it bore scoped. His dad is sort of a gun nut so I have no doubt everything will check out. I need to get out and shoot it to see how I handle the recoil, he says its a pussy cat because its so heavy.
What do you think of the 300 weatherby BB? It seems like weatherby is sure proud of there ammo at the store and I dont reload yet. Does it compare to the RUM?

The 300 Weatherby is similar to the RUM. Factory ammo is going to cost and arm and a leg with either one. recoil should be a non-issue in the Sendero, Jon Boy.

What are your uses for this rifle? You mentioned moderate ranges. The Sendero is really at its best when "stretching" its legs a little. I think building a .270 in a more portable weight might be a better option.

Before you guys get on Edelweiss, remember he just posted what he would do for himself.

As far as a caliber choice goes, I think the .270 is a fine choice for a "moderate" range gun. I don't think those are the guns Edelweiss is intersted in, and that was what he was referencing. Ballistically, the .264 will walk all over the .270 once you get past "moderate."

It's a great price if you go for the deal. Scheels will sell it for $1600. My buddy has one in 7mm STW and it's a very accurate gun. The draw back is like you said very heavy.

Purpose would be for elk hunting. I figured if it was a killer deal Id pick it up. As far as moderate goes id say 400 yards is moderate, and that is why I said the difference between a 264 win and 270 with a 22 pipe (standard length) and factory ammo is small. Im more of an archer than anything so long range doesnt interest me much, but I suppose I could get into it more if I get this gun. Im going to have to go and shoot it before I make a decision. In that case, that is a good deal on a great rifle, but it doesn't seem to be optimal for your uses. I would look at a sporter.

You could buy a 2nd hand 270 ADL synthetic for about $300, put one of Bell and Carlson's M700 mountain rifle stock on it for $500 and have a light weight 270.

Check your Walmart, they often have super cheap deals on M700s, we buy a lot of guns there just for the action.

Glass bedding compound kits can be had for $20-50, and you could youtube the way to do it.

This is pretty good advice for your situation. The B&C stock can be had for $250 shipped. For 500-600 bucks you are looking at a good package to meet your needs, and meet them better than the Sendero. I would just add that bedding kits are often not all they are cracked up to be. I would invest in Devcon Steel Putty for a compound. Kiwi Neutral Shoe Polish for a release agent, and non-drying modeling clay.

No need to buy a new 270 I already have one. Already bought a boyds laminate blank that my dad and I are going to lighten up like the savage "light weight hunter" and do some other wood working with it. Read up on glass bedding and went with the devcon like you suggested, seems like its the best out there and wont break down over time, all though it was expensive and I have no idea what im going to do with the 1 pound can of it. The savage actions seem a bit different to bed but I think I have it figured out. Will probably have the bolt and barrel fluted and then cerakoted. Ill top it with a leupold ultra light down the road. None of that really adds up to an extremely "light weight" gun, but it definitely adds to the "cool" factor, and I like to tinker with shit. Its going to be a long term project that I look forward too.
Oh yah and I just started a new job so hopefully ill be buying the sendero shortly too
