Awesome bucks! What is the latest on SD deer n antelope? I have points for both but it looks like no lope tags are being issued to nonresidents and very few west river deer tags.
I have only lived and hunted in SD since 2008 but a lot has changed in that amount of time. GF&P went from issuing triple goat tags in the county I hunted, to now requiring points to draw a tag. I'm not sure how much EHD affects them but I do know the harsh winters took their toll.
From what I've seen, deer are a similar story. I would say numbers are generally down statewide but the west river deer have been impacted more. EHD killed a lot of deer in the south central part of the state in 2012 after the flooding.
That being said, huntable numbers do exist in most areas imo. If you're the type of guy that is willing to hunt a lower population of animals to avoid crowds, SD might be worth looking into.
These are simply my observations and I am in no way an expert. Maybe Retterath can touch on what i've said?

Thanks for the reply Bucks.
Any idea what it takes for a NR to draw a tag in NW S Dakota, Harding county? I see that there is a pref point pool draw on g& f site, but nothing on how MANY points to draw.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this post, but the west river deer numbers are down including antelope also. West corson county got hit terrible this year on the whitetails. Right now the best antelope heard is in Harding county around buffalo but don't know draw odds for antelope. For west river resident my wife and I both drew whitetail tags last year, then after we got our tags in the mail 3 weeks later the g&f sent out letters wondering if we were willing to give back tag cause now they realized the numbers were terrible. Now to draw a special deer tag which is you can shoot either whitetail or mulie it will take a resident about 4-5 years to get that. Talked to the game warden and they are definitely going to cut back on deer tags this year.
