Ok guys how would you say you score mule deer sheds, even if you only find one side how would you guys score them? Is there a way to better guess the buck without both sides

Just dbl the score and add avg spread for the area (unless it has really short beams, then just figure in the beam measurement for spread). It won't be perfect, but I wouldn't worry much about getting the spread wrong since it doesn't calculate into the score as much.

It is tough because he may be weak on one side. Hard to find a perfect match. Hell, the other side may be 20" larger or smaller. I find it easier to guess spread if I have 2 sides, then to try and guess with just one side. Either way, sounds like a dandy. I found one side of a big Whitetail and scored it at 78"

Right we measured him as a perfect symmetrical buck, and I'm sure there would be deductions on his other side, but the unit he is in is a trophy colorado unit, I'm pretty excited it's the biggest shed iv found to date an for a 2 hour hike after work it was worth it, the one side measures 89 inches alone

I would love to find the other side would be my first matched set and a big one for sure, he's bigger than any if the bucks I have shot, and with the other side I would put it on a skull plate just to have them together, and be a little closer to a rough score.

Do a radial search from where you found it and then if no luck, try and get in his mind and pic a trail or 2 to hit. Could be hidden in a bush or something when he bent down to feed. Use optics if you can. They help when the sun is right. Pray he didn't carry it for a week before losing it. I am lucky where I go because they are normally in the same places every year. I call them bone yards. If I find one, I usually walk a circle and find 5 or 6 within a 60 yd circle. One week all I found were left sides (23) next week went back out and found 24 and most were right sides. I have yet to go this year and fear the weeds and grass are getting too tall. But, I know where to look, so it should be good for finding a dozen maybe. I got a 7 point Whitetail, but I did not measure it yet. I did measure the 5 pointer because it was impressive. Good luck on that hunt!!

I appreciate the help everyone, and yes I agree I hope he didn't lose his other a few days before or after this one but where it was it seems to be a pretty common winter area for larger bucks, it's hard doing it urself covering the area I'm at but hopefully I can get out in a bit with my brothers to grid the entire area, or hopefully no one else found the other side before me

That's always true on sides not equaling out. Take this one for instance... 67.5x2+16(our avg)=151

He wouldn't make 140 let alone 150.

Honestly just getting lucky we have put in a ton of miles over the years and usually come up short here and there, this year we have gotten 2 good ones and were happy about that, I'm on call for work every other weekend so I can't be to far from town in case I get a call, so next weekend we have a few other places to go since I will be off call and can go outa service. That might be a new business haha offering shed hunting trips for people, think you would need an outfitting license ha
