My names Dale. Was recommended this forum from a member off of an African hunting forum. I had asked for some guidance on taking my first trip out west and trying to tackle a DIY Antelope hunt.
Had a late hunting start compared to many, bought my first hunting rifle the year I graduated college. Grew up around guns and shooting, grandfather was an avid deer hunter in Connecticut but my father never took to it. That year I went on first hog hunt and later that year shot my first deer with my bow. After those experiences I was full on addicted. I've spent countless hours since watching shows/videos (solo hunter, meat eater, etc), joined multiple forums and tried to hunt every chance I could over the last 6 years.
The last years I've lived in SC which opened up hog hunting as well. I've hunted predominately WMA and have been able to take 2 deer and 2 hogs each year while hunting every weekend of season. The only problem being state land here dosnt allow camping so can't get the "whole experience".
I've had the opportunity to fill in as father figure to my nephew who's now 10 and introduced him to hunting first by hunting hogs in FL and earlier this year hunting rams in TX as well as night hunting hogs. The part of hunting I've always pictured/imagined is the Colorado/Whyoming/Montana wide open spaces type of hunting while setting up camp and roughing it. What I can gather from research is pronghorn is a great way to start.
Long story short, looking to hunt antelope next fall and want any advice/tips/tricks etc on first backpacking hunt, what states best for OTC tags (im fine with a doe tag), and whatever else I should look for. Hope would be I go next year and can try to get a little bit figured out so can take my nephew the following year to get the full experience of hunting without breaking the bank.
Thanks
Dale
