I've had the InReach for a couple years now. You have your intial investment of purchasing it & then I activate it one month out of the year for elk season which is an additional charge annually. Over time it pays for itself vs a sat phone.
It pairs with your smartphone so texting is just like you'd do on the phone. You can also text without the phone, but it is very antiquated method. The Earthmate app on your phone also has a decent GPS. The SOS feature is very comforting in case the $*t ever hits the fan. Worthwhile investment for peace of mind & safety.

What In Reach model do you use?
I have been trying to decide between the Explorer or the Mini. I have a Garmin 650T Montana GPS so was thinking that the Explorer model wouldn't have much benefit other not having to carry 2 units. But also was concerned about using the SOS device as a GPS and potentially drain the batteries.

For what its worth. I had the in-reach SE. Yellow model. It worked well for what I was using it for.

You can find them on e-bay "cheap" now.
