Looking into either renting a sat phone. Heard you can rent them instead of buy. Or buying a in reach for this year's hunt. Just wanting some info on which way to go on equipment or buying/rent.

Thanks

I'm in the same boat. This will be my first hunting season with a kid, so part of me being able to hunt as much as I do is if I can be in contact in case of an emergency. I've always used a spot locator, which my wife enjoyed so she could see that I'm ok. Problem is there is no two way communication.

That being said I will be renting a satellite phone for a couple trips this year since I'll have zero reception. I've thought about buying one, but as pricey as thy are id like to try them out being dropping that much cash. I've never rented one before so I can't give you any goods sites. There are quite a few out there and many of the plans are pretty reasonable.

IMO......Work has me all over the globe in remote locations......just last week we tried to use a SAT phone someone had and it would only work in a certain spot.....couldn't move at all......that's been my experience with all makes and models of SAT phones.......for that reason my company went to In Reach and have had zero issues since then.

Spot has the satellite phone 50% off. Actually all items are. For 250 for the phone not a bad deal
I saw the SPOt sale today. Anyone have experience with the SPOT phone or maybe Global Star satellite network. I read their first generation satellites were plaqued with issue, but they now run off new 2nd generation satellites?

Originally SPOT sat phone is $500 but with the sale it's $250. The rate plans seems decent. Love to hear someone with actual experience using the phone.

I've been leaning in the direction of InReach, because of the reliability. It would be nice to be able to actually speak to someone though....
