I have a house on hwy17 not far away. Weather plays a big part as always, those elk will not tolerate snow. I am not experienced in the wilderness. I only know of two outfitters using the wilderness and most of the hunters go to Osier. There were thousands over there last year. Sorry I cant be more help but I think you can make a good hunt of it. One thing to remember is the Chama valley has 4000 head of elk mostly on the ranch. I know skirting the ranch works, just make sure you don't get on their ranch. They are not on my xmas list. Don't go into the Chama valley, its wall to wall hunters, however the first three mile is in NM then a cattle guard and fence. As soon as you cross the cattle guard there is a steep hill to your right. Its a hard but short climb up and the big bulls will be up there and that is toward the wilderness. Good luck
