I've been doing some searching of the San Juan area for a hunt coming up. 2 Cow elk meat tags.
SUCCESSFUL: Antlerless Elk
Hunt: San Juan
Weapon: Any Legal Weapon
Your season date(s): Nov 21, 2022 - Jan 31, 2023

Never been to San Juan and plan to contact a biologist in the area to get some info. I'm thinking Bears ears East / West, South Elk Ridge, Kigalia Point, and Round Mountain area. With the dates above we plan to hunt Dec 4th-10th, and not sure how the weather is. I have a 10'x12' tent and camp stove, and plan to camp out. Is the areas above a good place to start or should I look elsewhere? Any pointers would be great, not looking for honey holes, just good camp spots and areas to glass.

I’ve never hunted it, send @Winchester a message. Might be your best bet.

San Juan is a beautiful place to visit. The place is huge. Day one we went scouting of the area. We rode our motorcycles to cover ground and checked out several areas including Milk Ranch. We stumbled on a herd of elk and a nice bull. We got close but could get the job done and elk winded us, gone. Day 2 early morning we hunted the area again and didn’t see anything. We moved around and glassed, nothing. Towards the evening we spotted the herd about 1400 yards away. We put the stock on but never found them. The next day it started snowing and made thing interesting. Never saw the herd, but found tracks. We glassed all morning and saw nothing but mule deer. We packed up and heading more into the forest. We traveled at least 35 miles and saw some very cool country. Didn’t see and elk and figured they had to be lower. We got some serious snow fall in the back and lots of ice. This made ride our motorcycles very interesting and entertaining. We made it out and back to our truck. We decide to hunt the area where we spotting the elk herd. Over the the few days it snowed a lot and made it difficult to travel. We hunted while it was snowing and hopefully see tracks or something.
The next day or so it cleared up but lots of snowfall. We found tracks but never to spot any elk. Our trip came to an end with no elk down. However, we had a great time and memories were made. Took lots of photos as well. I can share if interested.

I totally forgot about giving an update. I was working on it, got super busy with work and family. Start over with elk points and maybe next year a deer hunt with my son. Currently Working on my next bull elk hunt in New Mexico. Got drawn for a nice tag, can’t wait. Online scouting and gather as much information as possible.
