What do y'all think? I found a 1978 Ruger 77 in a 6mm that has been shot eight times and is excellent shape. What would y'all give and do those early 77s shoot worth a hoot? Thanks

I have a Ruger M77 I bought in 1976 in 25-06. It is the early model with a tang safety. I have shot literally 1000's of rounds thru it and killed over 50 deer and 50 antelope with it. it is in totally stock condition. My favorite big game rifle.....period. They came in several ways, with or without sights, some had Ruger scope rings too. The only disadvantage is they require a different style ring/base to mount a scope because of the way Ruger designed the top of the receiver. If you can get it for a reasonable price, I'd jump on it. Current Blue Book of Gun Values list it at around $500 (no scope) in the condition you describe. There were sever variation up to and including a varmint model.

I would grab it a second if the price is right. Be aware though that the barrel quality in the early Rugers was hit or miss. I like Rugers though and would probably give $500.00 for a really nice one if I knew the barrel was bad.

Natree, sounds like a good deal on a like new rifle, I had an older full-length stocked 77 carbine in .308 with a 2x8 leupold compact scope on it...I'm still kicking myself for trading it off!

If it was put up clean I'd say go for it. The old tang safety Ruger is the only M77 I'd bring home. The ones I've had were good shooters. Though the 338 needed a bedding and float job to really come alive. I'm currently watching the local papers for a nice tang safety 77 to bring in as a winter project.

I have a older ruger in 6mm remington I love it I'd jump on it. The 6mm remington is getting hard to find.

I have a older tang safety Ruger 77 6mm with a low serial number...#470. It shoots great. Very accurate. I've taken a lot of deer and antelope with it over the years. 6mm ammo is getting hard to find and can be pretty expensive but I reload and years ago I bought 1000 new cases for a real good price so I'm set for some time.
