Ruger ... American made

I am looking at purchasing a Ruger rifle in .300 Win Mag and would like to get the members thoughts as to whether I am making a good decision or not and what would you purchase in place of the Ruger.

I like rugers and own several of them. I personally like the Remington model 700. About 5 years ago I bought a 300 win mag in the 700 SPS stainless. I replaced the stock with a boyds, bedded it, replaced the X mark pro trigger with a timney. Topped it off with a Nikon Monarch III 6-24X50mm BDC. I get .5" groups with 185 grain Berger VLD over IMR 4831. If your looking for a economy gun. The ruger american is hard to beat. I would still replace the stock on it. I've got 3 700's setup the same, the other 2 are a .264 win mag & a 25-06.

Ruger builds fine firearms but I don't care for the newer versions of them. I own a few of the old M77's with the tang safety and love them. I am not sure of the standards that the new ones have but they have been notorious for very heavy triggers. They tend to lean on the safety first slogan but aftermarket triggers fix that real fast.

For other manufactures I like Weatherby, you can go with their Mark V rifles that are made in the US or their Vanguard line that is made by Howa in Japan, it all depends on what you want to spend.

I just bought a Ruger 77-22 chambered in 22 Hornet a few months ago. It is a very nice gun but, as others have noted, the trigger is gonna need some work.

I have owned Ruger rifles and was satisfied with them. I now own Remington, Savage, Browning and Tikka. I would have to buy Tikka if I was buying a new rifle now. Great adjustable trigger, smooth as silk action and laser accurate.

I like my Tikka T3 lite in 300wsm. A limbsaver was all it needed.

The newer model Ruger controlled round feed versions I've shot (3) were accurate hunting rifles, 257 Rob, 260 Rem and 30-06, but none were of recent manfu, all 8+ ish years or older. All 1 - 1.5 moa or better with favored factory fodder. Triggers were just OK, but fine for nearly all hunting. The trigger on the American has a lever like Savage, and is decent. Have not tried the newer LC6 trigger, I think it is, on their Hawkeye model, which is what you are considering I think? May pay to try one to be sure you like it.

Your choice is fine IMO. As would be many others... Good gun and a caliber that will cover N America well. If you plan to use it for very long range work, I might have a different opinion.

What is your price range? On the less expensive end I think Savage is the best gun for the money.

I have two Ruger #1B's and my son has a Ruger MKII . They all shoot very well and I think that Ruger makes a good solid gun. I really like what they have done to the Model 77 in their Hawkeye model. Very nice rifle.

Which model of the Tikka would you buy in the 300 Win Mag?

I have the T3 Super Lite (not T3x). Replaced the kick pad and mounted a VX3 4.5 x 14 x 40 in the DNZ one piece mount, adjusted the trigger and went hunting. Very happy with it. I rotate hunting rifles but if I was buying another new one it would be Tikka.

the newer Hawkeye versions have the LC6 trigger which is a lot better than the older versions. I own and have owned a lot of Ruger 77s to me the newer ones have a lot more going for them with smoother actions as well as the upgraded trigger. I have 3 of stainless Hawkeyes in 300wm, 338wm & 375 Ruger. they all shoot less than 1MOA. I cant say that for the rest of the older tang safetys & mkii Rugers I own LOL. the older ones all needed a bit of TLC to get them to shoot to my expectations.

My local shop has a stainless T3 for $500 in like new condition. Just can't swing it.
