Here's one for you. Has anyone out there had any experience with the Ruger #1 and had accuracy issues? I made a trade with my gunsmith and this great looking gun with a custom stock shoots poorly. The group (pattern) spreads vertically. First shot is good, second is 2-3 inches higher and the 3rd is 3" higher, still! I've read a bit on the various sites that this is common with this gun and it has to do with the 2 piece stock and harmonics. The accepted fix for this is a set screw, for which you have to drill and tap the forearm hanger, that applies pressure on the barrel. There is also a kit, I believe it it the Hicks kit, that has an adapter for the forearm hanger and it does the same thing, except you don't have to drill and tap the hanger. There is also a bit of inleting involved. Anyway, before I jump into this project, I wanted to check with the Forum and make sure I'm on the right track. Thanks guys!

I have had my Ruger #1 for 5 years now and have never had a problem like your describing. Sorry to hear it's happening to you.

topdog I have two Ruger #1B's and they both shoot great. One is a 30-06 and it shoot 1/2-3/4" groups at 100 yards with 165 gr. Accubonds of Partitions at 2940 fps. It has always shot great. The second one is a Ruger #1B in 6mm Remington. It too would string its shots, but not quite as badly as yours does, but string them non-the-less it would. You are correct in that it's the front hanger that usually creates the problem. It can be fixed and will work for you and shoot as you had hoped it will. I'm curious as to what caliber it is in? My gunsmith worked his "magic" on mine and I'm not quite sure what all he did, but I believe it did involve bedding the rear portion and floating the front portion of the wood stock and maybe something else. I have not had the forend off to see all what was involved, but you are on the right track. I am going to put his name and phone number and you could give him a call. He's a great guy and an excellent gunsmith and would be able to tell you what he would do or at least suggest you have someone do. I hope this helps.

topdog when I am talking about bedding the rear portion and floating the front portion, it is the front forend piece I am talking about. After I read my response, I could see it might be a little confusing. Sorry and I hope your gunsmith can help you out on this. Maybe my guys should talk to your guy?
6mm, Thanks for the phone #. I intend to call and get some advice from your smith. Sure is an aggravating situation, to have a gun look so good, but shoot so bad! It is a re-bored 35 Whelen. Originally, it was a 30.06. Anyway, thanks to you and the other responder.

Topdog, I had a Ruger #1 in 30.06 and I had the same vertical stringing that you mentioned. I tried everything, I'll bet that I tried 10-15 different loads & bullets, plus some (YUCK) factory ammo...nothing worked, and the gun went away. I never considered that it was a bedding problem. I loved the rifle otherwise!
