Very nice. I always love an old rooster with spurs like that. You have to hunt them a little different than the young birds or get very lucky.

Nice! Wish all out Pheasants hadn't disappeared around here. Used to be lots of them, but too damn many skunks, raccoons and foxes. The eggs and chicks don't stand a chance.

I know!!! I hunted south of Montrose 27 years ago and did well for some roosters. There are still a few around, but not like back then.
NE69 , They are usually gone by the time your engine turns off!! Since you live in bird country, you know the drought has been bad and it limited cover and any hatches of young. I was hunting over New Years and in 3 days , me and my hunting buddy shot 24 roosters and only 2 were from that years hatch. You get them old birds in a big crp field and it is a battle of witts. You can't just walk from one end to the other. I will go in and start walking circles. Give them something to think about other then the army march!! It has worked well for me!! Oh, plus have 3 good Dogs seems to help a little.

Yup. I love to match wits with them in January. 1 dog and myself work a field and I usually only shoot 1 then just watch the dog. 2 years ago I had probably 400 birds staying in a crp field about 1/2 mile away from the house in March. I don't think they raised a chick out of all them. Didn't help when the crp was windrowed and baled but it was sure a sight in the evening when they would all fly back in to roost.
