My son turns 12 early in September and would like to try his hand at an antelope this fall. Doe or buck, doesn't matter but rifle preferred. I'm looking for some tips or help on finding a place to go, maybe in SE CO. I would also like to hunt as well, but getting him an antelope to start him off right is my priority #1. So I need to figure out how/where to apply for tags. Thanks in advance for any help out there.

I'm tagging along.

I'm in the same boat. My son just turned twelve and Im putting him in for the Muzzleloader Elk Bull with me and a rifle antelope in the same area.

Am not familiar with CO, but when my kids were younger we drew several great youth hunts in NM. Have not looked lately, but that would be worth a check. The other state that would be the top of the list is WY. The NM regs would answer if NM is a good choice for you, and there are numerous WY threads on here with ideas about zero point, left over buck tags, doe tags etc. WY used to have very cheap youth antelope tags, probably still does.

Z25 and MD,

Take it for what its worth....if your gonna meat hunt with the kids then head up to WY and get doe tags off the leftover or put in for them in the draw......100% success usually.....or grab some doe tags in CO off the leftover list and put in for points this year.

Not to sound like a A--.....just a recommendation......don't combine and try to hunt antelope and elk during the muzzle season in CO....if you draw muzzle elk tags then concentrate on that......the other beauty about WY lope hunting is that later rifle season......always tags available usually......1 point though in WY does a lot for the kid in the draw.

On the same subject with the kids/youth stuff......always put the kids in for elk hunts in GMUs that have multiple cow hunts and late season cow hunts.....the best thing about CO is the kids can keep hunting until an elk is down/end of all season in most places. My son is on his last youth year so no more of that good deal for us!!!

Got any questions PM me.

All the best.

Thanks for the tips guys, but I'm looking to try to stay in Colorado. Don't see the need to spend $100 in WY when my son can get a youth tag in CO for $14. I"m still putting in for points in WY and CO, and he will too. He doesn't want to try to hunt elk yet, doesn't feel he's ready.
