So I have 8 preference points going into this application for antelope. For years I?ve been holding out for unit 67, but with point creep, I doubt I?d pull that tag this year which means another year of waiting. I?m getting the itch to go hunt a goat and was wondering about thought on cashing in the points for unit 83? Pros and cons of each? What would you do in this situation?

Well you heard it first here.

A man who goes by the name of BigSexy is itching to find himself a goat.

83 is a good unit. I work that area some, personally with that many points I'd look at the areas 60-75. Think there's better choices in most of those hunt areas.

All Joking aside, could you draw 92? It looks pretty good on paper. Might have to draw it on a special draw. Not sure what it drew out at this year.

Any unit requiring 6-8 points is going to yield a great hunt with plenty of access. I typically hunt units that a NR can draw with 2-3 points and have a great time. Make a list of units that required 6-8 points in 2018 and ask yourself what you want out of the hunt. Do you want to hunt upland birds and small game too? Do you want to do some Fishing? Do you want to stay in a certain town or park? Then pick the unit that gives you the most of what you want. I don't think there will be much difference in access or trophy quality in the units on such a list. For elk and deer, some units stand head and shoulders above the rest. This is not true of antelope, in my experience.

I am in the same boat. I will have 7 points. Any advice on the 57-2 tag? What is the type 2? I've only hunted 38-1 and type 6 tags in the past.

I'll have 6 for antelope and 8 for deer after buying this year.
Might plan a combo hunt for my son and I in 2020.
We have the same.
My daughter will have 7 antelope

This is good advice.

I hunted 83 last season with 6 points. I covered a lot of land, and saw 1 goat that was a no brainer. Lots of decent goats, and you would have a ball. Might find a better number of big goats elsewhere.

You would most likely draw 67 in the special draw this year. I'm not sure why everyone gets such a hard-on about 67 but it seems like I hear so many guys wanting to go there. Yea I know it's a good unit but is it really that much better than other nearby units?

Sounds like you've maybe never hunted antelope before? If that's the case, I'd draw some 2nd choice tags for at least 1 or 2 years to get a better handle on field judging them. They can be damn tough to field judge and it might be worth it for you to at least look over some bucks in other units to get a better handle on judging them. Or if you don't care that much about how big of a buck you shoot, take the advice of go deep and pick any of those units.

I guess I'm not familiar with the second choice tags? Didn't realize that there were many units that you could draw with no points that had public land with access?
