Remington Recall

My dad has an early 80's 700 bdl that is not part of the recall. The gun went off this season when he took the safety off while deer hunting .
I was setting next to him and it was a situation I don't ever want to be in again.
The unexpected recoil took a chunk out of his thumb.
I know you're supposed to clean and maintain the mechanism but that shouldn't happen.
Even though he's attached to the gun and hunted with it for years I would never trust it again after the dangerous situation it created.

Your Dad's gun will be in the recall because it has that Walker trigger in it just like everyone of them from the day they started manufacturing them until 2006 when the changed to the X Mark Pro that is also under a recall for another type of trigger problem. His misfiring was more than likely identical to what everyone else has experienced when the gun went boom without touching the trigger. It happens when the safety is moved to the fire position or the bolt is touched to open it. Get the trigger on that gun replaced before you put another cartridge in it.

KY - how did it take a "chunk" out of his thumb?? Did the bolt explode in his hand? or did he have his thumb over the muzzle when it went off? I'm just trying to determine how he suffered this injury from a bolt in the locked position.

Have you ever had a gun go off on you unexpectedly? When things like this happen your usually not holding it like you would if you were squeezing the trigger. A gun thats not being held firmly will jump pretty good if it goes off unexpectedly. You dont have to have the "bolt explode" or have your "thumb over the muzzle" to get a chunk taken out of your thumb my it.

He's going to take it to a gunsmith.
Orion--the gun was not shouldered when the safety was flipped off. Imagine the unexpected force of the recoil on the meaty part of your thumb from the safety. Not a serious injury but enough to bleed quite a bit.

This recall we're talking about hasn't even been finalized and announced yet, as it was just agreed to in the lawsuit last Friday and the Judge still has to give a favorable ruling to close the case, so I have no idea what you're talking about. In fact, Remington has already come out with their own blurb in the news objecting to it being called a recall. No matter what comes out of the Remington Offices and what they call it, I'd take it immediately to a reputable gunsmith and have him put a good aftermarket trigger in it. It will probably be between $100-$200 for a Timney trigger and more for a Jewell. I have read some other stuff out on the net that says Remington is even going to reimburse people that have had that done in the past. If you do, I would suggest you have the gunsmith make out a detailed slip on the gun (serial #, etc.) and what he did along with the price charged so you can submit it if they go that route.

Get your Dad a nice Timney trigger/safety combo for under $150.00 for Christmas. Then he can keep and enjoy his 700. JMO

New info on this deal. If the judge signs off on the deal you can join a class action suit and get a Walker replaced with an X Mark for free. If you put an X Mark in on your own dime they will reimburse you. If you have an older gun like my 721 they will not do anything to the trigger but we'll give vouchers for overpriced Remington stuff.
