My 700 trigger was fine but I kept the wrenches and files away from it. You can get a timney or Jewell and replace it in 10 minutes if you're so inclined.

It has nothing to do with people tinkering with them! This is a recall of 7.85 million of the old guns with the Mike Walker designed "Fire Control" trigger that was replaced by the X Mark Pro that was already under a huge recall. I wonder why Remington can't put a reliable, safe trigger/safety in their products that won't go bang when it's not supposed to!

Almost had a serious accident with one of those once. My buddy replaced the trigger the next day.

Glad to hear that he did that and everyone else that has one should do the same thing. Many Remington "lovers" just don't believe that their beloved rifle could do such a thing and probably will not do anything to correct the defect because they have never had it happen to them. It may never happen and then again due to the design it may the next time they go out to the range or into the field. Some also say that if they had been pointed in a safe direction there wouldn't have been injuries and deaths. What they obviously don't even take into consideration is the chance of a ricochet doing damage even when it's pointed away from someone and I believe that happened in at least some of the lawsuits.

Just looked and my 30-06 is on the recall list. The nearest authorized repair shop is 2 hours away and won't be near it any time soon, I guess I will send the gun in. Better safe than sorry. Would you guys do the same?

I had my old model 700 go off without pulling the trigger twice. This was in the early 80's, a call to Remington produced a "There's nothing wrong with the gun...it's YOU" response from the person on the other end. All it took was closing the bolt hard. They've been lying aboiu this for almost 70 years now...that's what I call serious denial! I recently inherited an early model 700. first thing I did was replace the trigger with a Timney, now I have a safety that works, and a crisp light trigger pull.

Is there a list of serial #s for this recall? Or just the fire control triggers?

The newer ones made from 2006 on have the X Mark Pro and are under a different recall and have been for quite a few months. This recall involves ALL the 700s and 7s that were made from the 40s until they changed to the newer trigger in 2006. IMHO if I had any Remington in my safe I would replace the trigger with an aftermarket one and be done with it. For somewhere probably between $100-$200 it's not worth the risk or hassle and if you can read directions the replacement is easy to do yourself. I put a Timney in an old 03A3 30-06 and it was simple and brought the pull down to about 3.5# and it's now a MOA rifle when the old trigger was terrible, although safe (probably at least 8#).

I wonder if the new triggers will be any better as far as trigger pull weight, I believe thet are set at 7lbs. I've had my 700 since 1979 and have never really liked the trigger pull.

I have not heard of a new design. The last recall was to simply clean the X Mark of "possible" excess thread locker. My guess is an X Mark is going to replace these older style triggers.
For $200 you can stick a jewell in it or the cheaper alternative is a Timney for $140. You'll feel the difference with the first shot.

Sounds like a good excuse to add some accuracy to my 270 win! They are still one of the finest out of the box rifles in my opinion. I can see why Remington would try to hide this, but it still doesn't make it right!

I know when I put a Timney in my 03A3 years ago that there was a huge difference in the pull weight I was able to set it to and still be safe. It went from a 2MOA rifle to under a MOA with that trigger.

My dad has an early 80's 700 bdl that is not part of the recall. The gun went off this season when he took the safety off while deer hunting .
I was setting next to him and it was a situation I don't ever want to be in again.
The unexpected recoil took a chunk out of his thumb.
I know you're supposed to clean and maintain the mechanism but that shouldn't happen.
Even though he's attached to the gun and hunted with it for years I would never trust it again after the dangerous situation it created.

"Subsequent memos during the testing process noted guns could be made to fire simply by switching off the safety"

This is what happened to me when I was 15. Luckily it was pointed in a safe direction and no one was hurt. It was my cousins gun and I dont know what year it was. I have a 1970's 700 that was given to me that I hunted with for a few years and it never had a problem but I have never really comfortable with it or been able to trust it after the other one going off and is why I bought a Winchester model 70.

I have never had any problems with my 700. The only thing I don't like about it is the heavy trigger. Guess I have a good reason to get a new trigger before something bad happens. Had it since the late 90's
