A buddy came to me wanting to start deer hunting this fall. Needed a new rifle but didn't have a ton of money to spend. He decided on the .308 caliber and we started doing some research on the low end "budget" rifles like the Savage Axis, Marlin X7, TC Venture, Ruger American and the newest Remington entry into the low cost rifles, the 783. I looked at reviews on them on line and actually found very good reviews on all of them. So then it became a matter of best price. And that's where the 783 won hands down! Cabela's had them on sale for $299, INCLUDING a 3-9X scope, (granted, not the best scope but not really that bad.) Plus Remington had a $40 rebate going on so he walked out of there for $259 plus tax. Heck, he could even afford to buy a couple boxes of factory ammo! He brought it over for me to look at and I've gotta tell you, I was very impressed! Nice smooth action, decent trigger, (a Savage Accu-trigger clone.) It has aluminum bedding blocks and a fully free floated barrel that uses a Savage type barrel nut. The proof came that next weekend when he took it to the range. He did a real good job of cleaning the bore before he ever shot it. Did a good break in procedure, fired 1 shot and cleaned for the first five rounds, then three shots and clean five times and he was done with his first box of ammo. Then he shot several 3 shot groups that averaged less the 1-1/2", and that was shot off a stack of 2x4's for the front rest and a rolled up sweater for the rear! For the money, I've gotta say this is a great little rifle! Comes in both long and short action with most all popular calibers up to 7mm Rem mag and 300 win mag. He's got me me thinking about picking up a .270 for my grandson.

Be careful with the bolt handle. I was looking at one yesterday that had been pulled off the bolt. Cost the owner a nice bull last fall he finally cooled down enough to look at it again yesterday while I was visiting.

Not welded, brazed and not very well. I have a handful of remingtons in various configurations and love them but I don't think, compared to the current market, I would get another one. Their quality seems to have slipped over the last few years.
