Remington 700 Scope Rail

I am working on Remington 700 for the upcoming 2013 hunting season. Currently have a 40mm Leupold scope mounted on an EGW 20MOA base with low Warne quick detachable rings.

The issue is the scope still sits a little bit too high, and I cannot get a full cheek weld on the stock.

My question is, does any other manufacturer make a 20MOA or 0MOA rail with a shorter height profile? I really like the idea of the QD rings for scope placement while shooting prone, but I would really need to get the scope lower.
I am not against having fixed bases & rings, as long as i can get the scope in a similar position for prone shooting.

Any other base/ring recommendations for a lower scope mounting would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A couple of questions:
1. Are you married to the idea of a 1 piece, picatinny style base?
2. Do you need the 20 moa base for long range shooting? Unless you are going to be shooting out to 900+, 20 moa likely isn't needed.

This type of setup is the reason most precision guns have an adjustable cheekpiece. A 20 MOA base is really going to lift the rear of the scope and it is almost impossible to get a good cheek-stock weld on a stock without a raised cheek piece.

Leupold Mark 4's are lower than the EGW's, but you are likely not going to drop enough to totally fix your issue.

Have you considered a Karsten cheekpiece?
^^^This....or even just a stock pack from Triad Tactical or Tac Ops.

Another option for cheek piece, if you don't like the ones mentioned above, is to send it to a guy to have Terry Cross's KMW hardware installed. It's a nicer adj cheek system, but also costs more. He goes by the name "stockdoc" on Sniper's Hide. His lead time is ~2 weeks, assuming he has hardware on hand. I know recently he had a long wait for hardware, but got some in and is doing a stock for a buddy of mine currently. Price is $175, does excellent work.

I am not married to the one piece base, it just allows forward scope placement for prone shooting.
I am not married to 20MOA either, it just made it possible for paper punching at 1000 yards.
Gun is realistically only a 6-700 game harvester anyways due to energy loss.

I do have a strap on Bradley cheekpiece that I used with the old wood stock. I would prefer not to use any cheekpiece if I can avoid it, as this just adds bulk to a rifle I intend to hunt with. Low bases and rings seem to be the proper solution.

Anybodying have any recommendations for low bases that would still allow the scope to reside approximately where shown fore/aft?

I'd say you're stuck to a rail if you want the scope in that position. Kind of a miserable problem to have. Your scope definitely looks too far forward for me. You must have a long neck, as I'd be rubbernecking pretty bad with a set up like that.

Start looking at 0 MOA rails and comparing various companies low rings and see which ones measure the lowest. Or buy a scope with a shorter eye relief..... You don't hear that very often...:)

Stock fit might be another thing to look at. You might have a too short of LOP. If you really wanted to move to a mount like a Talley, you'd probably have to look into increasing LOP to get your head further back (because you moved the scope back).

I come from the competitive highpower shooting realm, and a scope position similar to this is pretty common in the long range prone game. Stock is a Greybull with length of pull of about 13.5, so nothing out of the ordinary.

What kind of bases do you guys use to keep scopes low to the gun? Leupold STD windage base/ring set up pretty common?

I would rather use a cheekpiece than give up the flexibility of a rail, but that is me.

You could use super low rings to bring your scope down. If the objective won't clear the front of the rail, you can cut the front of the rail off.

If your ocular assembly is going to hit the back of the rail, you can cut it down, too.

My setup is as follows: M700 action, #6 contour custom barrel which is a heavy sporter contour. MK 4 LR 1 piece base (15 MOA),
MK 4 Medium ht rings, VX-3 4.5-14 X 50mm objective. The scope objective has plenty of clearance above the barrel and the front of the base. The scope would even clear the barrel if it was a straight bull barrel.

I have a strap on check piece on my HS Precision stock and I get a pretty good cheek weld.

Hope that helps

If you want to get some low bases I really like the Talley's, but you also cannot go wrong with leupold dovetails IMO. Both should provide you more than enough elevation for 6-700m.

Good luck
