I've messed up in the past by not having a "real" camera. Always have my Olympus waterproof camera now. Not the greatest, but a self timer is priceless when you are by yourself.

I always carry my Cannon HV40 Video camera with me and it takes fantastic photos as well as video.

I just picked up an Olympus TG-4 and 2 extra batteries. Its waterproof, good in cold weather, has built in GPS and can be linked to smart phone. Actually has features that I'll never use, just printed the manual-121 pages. Hope to get to use it other than landscapes.
