Thanks NDHunter! Lots of timber in those first two pics but lots of open range in the third. That's what it looks like from my Google Earth scouting is that there are large tracts of timber but also plenty of open areas. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to focus on hunting? Open areas or timber? I was thinking focus on the open areas and hope to catch deer moving out of the timber. Thoughts?

With a rifle I would focus on the foothills, especially if early weather hits... You start to run into private land issues but this is usually your best chance at locating deer.

I drove up to Burgess Junction this past fall, holy crap batman were the atv's everywhere! I didnt spend much time but it seemed everywhere that looked good to go out and hike a elk hunter would appear on a ATV on some forest road I didnt see. That gave me a bad taste about elk unit 38, to many hunters for my liking.

Yea, this is my biggest concern but it has more NF than the other units I was looking at with 0 wilderness so maybe I can get away from most people. Hope so!

Im sure with some research you will find a few places to get away, main thing to look for is ATV and horse trails. Treat them like main highways and try to avoid them...this might help in that unit.

Also, I was told the deer hang close to the timber/meadow edge at first and last light. So maybe if you could glass a large meadow and focus on the timber edge you might be able to get on one.
