Region W

Hey all, will be heading back to Wyoming this year for antelope in 71 (3rd choice) and Region W (2nd choice). Have hunted in Wyoming for the past few years, but these are new areas to me. If anyone has any pointers or ideas for general areas that would be awesome. I live in Oregon and the tag god kicked my butt again this year......... thanks

You guys are killing me here!! I will post more about this area once I get back from floating the Platte. The upper North Plate is fishing awesome right now by the way. Back to the subject at hand. Keep in mind that you can only hunt areas 82, 100, and 131. Areas 84, 101, and 102 are limited quota only. The General tag areas have a great deal of public and range from desert, to flat plains and all of the way to 11,000 ft Bridger Peak. I guess I need to know what kind of hunting you want to do. This area has the highest concentration of deer in the state in the sand hills area as well as the highest concentration of hunters in the state, in the sand hills!! Let me know what you want to hunt. I will post some pics when I get back from teaching some fish what not to eat!!!

Wyoming_man, thanks for the response. The Mckenzie River here in Oregon is spitting out salmon and steelhead right now. Will fish it until bear season starts August 1st. We don't plan on packing in, but plan on putting miles on the hoof. I like to glass anywhere I can. Would much like to get away from the crowd. I have a newbie hunting with me so I dont want to scare him away immediately. Thanks

Don't let anyone BS you, there is no way to get away from the crowd in region W unless you have exclusive trespass rights to private property. It is so popular because there is a road or trail down every draw and along the edges of every ridge, so you don't actually have to step out of your truck or off of your ATV. It's too bad because the region has some of the best mule deer habitat in the state and fantastic genetics, but "sportsmen" being what they are, there are ATV trails into every canyon in the region. The recently retired game warden from the region mentioned to me that he hoped things would turn around before the Baggs mule deer herd went extinct.

Look for a spot on your maps that is more than 1/4 mile from a two track road and make a stand, the orange army might push something past you...

If it was your second choice, you probably won't be dissapointed, you might bumble into a 3 - 4 1/2 year old, take it.

Thanks for the help. Plan on shoving my face in maps for the next long 2 and a 1/2 months. Any tips for 71 for antelope? seems there is some BLM and State land but is it accesible? Really looking forward to deer hunting. Can't wait!

I put my niece in for Region W tag and wouldn't ya know it she drew!! Well as far as the Orange Army the Northern Region Utah General deer is by far worse than Region W so we'll have a marry time and see if we can scrounge up a buck for her. Good luck this fall
