Region M

Hey all, just looking for some friendly advise. We drew region M tags as a second choice, while building up PP. I have not been able to find alot of info in regards to region M. We have spoken with the bio for the region, but have not been able to get ahold of the GW. We have secured our HMA permission slips, scoured over maps of WIAs and accessible public lands.
The question I have, is hunting around the copper, lysite mtns area. Looking at google earth, looks to have some rougher country, with a fair amount of public lands. Does this area have a decent deer population and is there alot of hunting pressure in the area?
Any insight that may help in our quest for a mule deer would be greatly appreciated.

I have hunted the Lysite area in the past, but not for several years. Last was about 5 years ago. The deer population had then taken a hit because of the drought. My info now says it is better. but thats about all I can share. I'll probably be hunting M next year, but it will be on private ground. Good Luck!

Hoe is your look into region M going?
Looks like the there is plenty deer and public land.

think we have narrowed down the search to a few areas. Talked with the bio and gw for the area, they gave us some info. Been studying alot of maps and and aerial photos, hopefully we find a few deer. Always is a fun time hunting in Wy regardless.

I was scouting in region M in Late August. Saw some really good deer and at least on book antelope and book buck. Had several conversations with local biologists. Found a few areas with access that require some hiking which is much more to my liking. Found a free public land map that downloads to my gps which makes it easier to stay on the right land.

How did your hunt in Region M turn out? I am thinking of hunting there next year for an antelope/mule deer combo with my dad. Deer are secondary, but would be nice if there were a few mature deer around too.

It could have gone better, on day 3 of the hunt, I pulled a calf muscle and was down for the count-hard to hunt when you cant walk. With that being said, we saw deer everyday, alot of small bucks/does. Talked to a couple of other camps that had good success, and took some average bucks. The day before we left, it snowed in the higher elevations, and temps dropped. If we could have hunted a few more days, I think we could have had better success. We did fill 2 out of 3 tags, but I came home empty handed, and still havent recovered to 100% yet. I would consider going back, especially picking up the tag as a second choice.

ffd061, sorry to hear about your luck. It sounds like Region M has lots of deer, but not a lot of big bucks. Anyway, hope you heal up.

Saw lots of deer, and I mean lots! The quality was as bad as the numbers were good. The number of hunters was higher than I expected but the areas we hunted were not pressured due to difficult (physical) access. I was disappointed to see so much hunting from vehicles and ATV's on remote public and private land. We passed on many average and smaller bucks. I doubt I go back to region M for deer inspite of seeing so many trophies during summer scouting. Those trophies were missing from the population when the season started, though the average and smaller bucks were all still there. Not sure what the explanation is for that, as it is not my experience in other units except those ares did not have an elk season that started prior to deer season. I would not recommend anyone hunt region M without a good GPS with private/public land boundaries loaded. It prevents a lot of potential issues.
