Question on CO draw system

I have a question about Colorado's draw system. From what I understand, you get to keep your preference points as long as you don't get drawn for your first choice. So, let's say I want to draw a tag for a unit that only requires 2 preference points and I already have those points in hand. Would it be to my advantage to select this unit as my second choice and select one that I know I won't get drawn for as my first choice? That way I may draw on my second choice and still get to keep my points. Also, what are the odds this approach being successful? Thanks

If the unit requires 2PP to draw then you will not draw it as a second choice. That's how many points it would take to draw as your first choice.

CO draws everyones 1st choices first, then if there are tags leftover after all 1st choice applicants have drawn those leftover tags can be drawn 2nd choice. If all the tags are drawn by 1st choice applicants there is no chance of drawing 2nd choice.

I would also look at the previous 2/3 yrs of draw results to see what it took to draw. Some units stay somewhat consistent in the points needed, while others go up each yr or two.

There is a special code to draw for receive a pp only. If you know it will be a few years just rack up points (I/e CO Moose or Sheep). If you have enough points always put your intended hunt as your first choice.
