Just wait until he kills one. I was hunting with my buddy last year and his boy killed his first deer. He is 6 and it was on public land. Him and his dad were sitting on opposite sides of a tree and the boy said I see one dad. His dad said be still you don't see nothing. Then he saw the deer and was determined he (the Dad) was going to shoot it. The deer jumped the creek and the boy toasted that tator with a 20 gauge. He could barely hold the gun up while practicing. His dad just sat there and cried. Said it was one of the happiest times he had ever had. Good Luck and enjoy

I remember when my son passed his Hunter Safety course many years ago (he is 52 now!). My Dad and I taught the course in California, where Dad was an instructor for over 50 years. My son was only 7 and we wanted to take him dove hunting that year. Dad really spent a lot of time with all the youngsters he taught, going the extra mile. He actually reads the questions to make sure all the young kids understand what the question is. My Dad really liked teaching the youngsters.

That's awesome. Can't wait until mine are old enough. I get so excited watching my son catch fish I'm going to need an oxygen mask after he shoots his first deer.

holly crap, at age 7? awesome. couldn't big game hunt in Idaho until age 12, but was changed to age 10 couple years ago. what did your 7 year old shoot deer with? my son is tall for his age but is so tiny, I have a .243 I plan to get him to start shooting, but im worried the recoil is going to scare him. I put a good pad on stock yesterday. ill start him with a heavy coat and then let him get use to it. .22 is highest cal he has shot, tomorrow will be first time with a hunting rifle. any tips? I started out with a 30-30, should I borrow one to let him start with that or just start with what he will be using?

He was using a .410. I put a slip-on recoil pad on it, and let him get used to shooting light loads until he was confident. When we went to slugs I made sure he had it tight to his shoulder every time, and in the right place. I just didn't want him to have a painful shot that spooked him. Started shooting a .20ga soon after and had no problems because of the added wieght.

Congrats ivory. It is awesome. Both my older two killed deer when they were 6. Double ladder stand with shooting rest was super handy for the young ones to prop up with. Now turkey hunting...that's a different story. Not near as predictable at least in GA. And you really need to be able to hold the gun up if your not hunting from a blind. I had shooting sticks but it's hard for a youngster to swing and swivel if needed.
