What would you buy for an exploring point and shoot camera? I want some telephoto capability for wildlife shots while exploring. Would the Canon Powershot SX30 IS fit the need? I would not be digiscoping with this camera.
The SX30IS is an excellent camera, and perfectly suited to your needs. Another option would be getting a nice HD camcorder that takes good stills. Canon and Sony make nice camcorders that fit the bill.
I have the Panasonic FZ40. It takes awesome pictures and I highly recommend it. It isn't as compact as others though, so you may not want it for an extended backpack hunt.
I've had Canon Point and shoots for hunting and fishing for the last 4-5 years and have beat the #&^$% outta them and they really hold up well if sat on, thrown in a pack, or bottom of a tackle box. I would definitely recommend them.
I recently purchased the FugiFilm S4000 camera. 30x optical zoom, 201x digital zoom. It does HD Stills and video. It is a unibody style camera. Looks like an SLR but is not.
I love it. Not too big to pack around. Its very light for its size, but has awesome optical zoom when you need it. It works well with my Cabelas mono pod as well as any standard tripod. Ran me about $200 at Costco on sale.
