So I struck out I nevada but my uncle scored a PIW tag. He doesn't really need help but I figured Inwould poae the question here.

Which hunts would you focus on if you had a PIW deer tag? For the sake of this thread let's focus on rifle and muzzloader hunts.

He is quite familiar with most of northern nevada specifically from elko and east.

Like I said he Has plenty of ideas just thought this could be a fun topic

This year I know a few guys that have gotten the PIW deer this year. It should be a great year for horn growth. All the western areas of the state in the late seasons will be good. N Washoe is coming back pretty good. I would concentrate on areas that I know that hold good bucks and be ready to pull the trigger in each season. Good luck

I would hunt unit 241 down south because there are some real monters there. I have seen video of 2 bucks that were over 40 inches wide in an area that I have personally set foot in. A friend of mine arrowed a buck that measured 31 inches wide. It is super hard to get a tag there in the regular drawing. It would take some real commitment for someone to put in the scouting time to find them. We have also picked up some outstanding sheds in that area.
It's true there are more deer up north but they seem to have heavier antlers down south.

Ya, there are probably 3 strong areas including 241 that have legit potential of producing 200"+ Mule deer. IF you put in the work. Lots of big Non typical's down there.

It allows you to hunt in any unit for the species you draw where there is an open season with whatever weapon is legal for that season. Only deer is open for non residents to apply.
The important part is ANY unit statewide.

In case you don't know it this should be treated as a once in a lifetime tag!! Unit 231 is known in Muley circles as the place to go. I love DIY but this tag and the Trophy Potential spell Guide, get on the phone to the Biologists in the South East Units and see what they recommend. Good luck and it should make a great story, God bless

Here's a PIW buck from a few years ago. I helped a buddy on this hunt and walked up on this buck at less than 15 yards. Ended up taking it at 35 yards with his muzzle loader. Big bucks in any of these units are hard to find and from what I've learned are hidden in pretty remote spots. This buck was a few miles from a road and in some nasty country.

Lucky. I wish I could convince him of that however it's the second time he has drawn it.

I told him there would be hell to pay if he filled the tag before November and it was less than 30 wide and 180"

This is only my opinion...you're are most likely to kill a large buck during the muzzy and archery hunts then in the later rifle hunts. If it were me with that tag I'd be out during the entire muzzy season trying to fill my tag and not be waiting until the later seasons.
