Peccary eyesight?

I have a hunt in a couple weeks I drew through the Texas system on a WMA.
Its a javelina hunt. I want to bow hunt and try and call one in, as the film I've seen of that is pretty awesome.

The hunt area requires everyone to wear hunter orange, vest and hat, because shotguns with slugs are also allowed during the same time frame.

The hunt only lasts from 10 am Saturday till noon Sunday (You thought you had short seasons!)

Does anyone think the orange will be a limitation to bowhunting them? Baiting is allowed so I can also take a ground blind and throw out some corn, but I am not interested in that.

I have only killed one in my life and it was a spot and stalk, I did not have on Orange but I do not think it would have made a difference. Masking your movement I think would be the key. I managed to get with about 45 yards and could have gotten closer. If your trying to call one to you I am not sure wearing Orange is going to that big of a handicap. I am sure others can give you a lot more info !

Calling javelina they either come running in or run off you never know which until you start calling.

I have very little expierence with them. I drew a management rifle hunt last year at Mason Mountain. I encountered them about 4 times. I was wearing orange & got within 20 yards every time. Five years ago my nephew drew a deer hunt at Elephant Mountain. He and I got within 20 yards of them also. We were wearing orange & everytime the wind was in our favor. They are some corn eating dudes! At least the ones at Mason Mountain. What area did you draw?

The Longoria unit of the Las Palomas WMA. Its only like 373 acres, bought primarily as white winged dove habitat. They publish success rates for prior year on all the hunts except the javelina, you are flying more blind on these hunts.

I shot one in college, had it made into sausage, and if I wasn't so broke I think I might not have eaten it.

Very poor eyesight but watch the wind. They can scent you in a stiff breeze from quite far off.

Think of it this way, they are short critters that evolved in south american woodlands and thick jungles so natural selection favored a stellar sense of smell versus good eyesight.

Yup very poor peepers but a nose like an ungulate. I did a spot n stalk hunt for them in 2000 and it was the most fun hunting I aver did. Had a blast. But boyh them buggers are hard to hit with an arrow. just when you think they are gunna stand still for a second to shoot,,, zip,, the take a few steps.
