Planning an archery elk hunt for next season and have spoken with 2 outfitters that seem like they could work out. Have asked for references but would also like to here if any of you have first hand experience with either outfit.

San Juan River Outfitters
Rancho Rojo Outfitters

Not looking to kill a giant but would like to get into elk and not have to shoot the first one so I could get the most out of the hunt experience. PM me if your more comfortable. Thank you in advance for your input.

I would suggest not asking for references but asking for the name and contact info for each hunter for the last two or three years. That way, they can't cherry-pick. You don't have to call them all but call at least several.

What kind of hunt are you looking at - fully guided, semi-guided, a ranch hunt, drop camp in the wilderness? Each has different expectations and conditions.

This is all new to me, so I'm looking for a fully guided hunt.

which units are you looking at? I hunted with David Matthews this year in the Gila and would recommend him to anyone. Same with Eric Martinez of Outlaw Outfitters...

Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way? Trying to focus more on a quality outfitter who has access to good units and will discuss with them the choices for outfitter pool. These outfitters hunt 6, 36, 34, 51 from what I remember in speaking with them. All seem to good units with various odds of drawing. Both said they have access to land owner tag$$$ if unsuccessful in the draw. Thanks for the tips on those outfitters. I'll check them out.

I hunted with http://trophyoutfittersonline.com/ for deer a few years ago. Good group of guys. I believe they hunt mostly in and around unit 16 and have taken some great bulls. We saw lots of elk on our hunt. Great country. Its either in the Gila or right next to it. Great camp(cabins), great food. Just south of Datil. I would definitely hunt with them again.

Did you find any references? I'm talking to San Juan river outfitters and Dan adler from AZ diamond outfitters.

Ask for a list of successful hunters and a list of unsuccessful hunters. If they won't provide, move on to another outfitter.
