We already have a plan to go the Selway in Idaho in 2018. We didn't think we would be able to get west again in 2017 to hunt elk, but it seems a possibility now. Any suggestions on an outfitter for a drop camp or a DIY area. Not looking for a trophy, just some elk and an adventure.
Thanks

Colorado or Montana offer good OTC for elk of the other States.. It's beyond me why people only think they will have success hunting with OTC tags in these two States unless they have a special draw tag. I lived 23 years of my life in Montana, tagged out since I was 15 years old there, not once did I have a special draw elk tag.. Colorado same way!

Do you have a state in mind? Season?
My father no longer bow hunts, so rifle it is. We're open to any state, just looking for some animals and a good time. We hunted the beaver head -deer lodge last year in MT. Had a great time, saw a ton of Muleys, a Griz and a few elk. Weather was warm so the elk were up too high still, hiked more than we hunted because we had to travel so far to get to them everyday. It was great though because we had deer tags too, so it was easy to get distracted by the Muleys.

This late in the game it's either OTC or left over tags. We aren't afraid to work/walk our ass off to get away from people, just looking for some direction as we are new to western hunting.

Thanks

Colorado has 2 OTC seasons where you are guaranteed a bull tag at least 2nd and 3rd Rifle although some units have leftover tags available. Imo if wait for leftover licenses to come out and see what you could get first season, or even muzzleloader.

Would you mind if I sent you a couple of questions about Montana. Me and my brother are going there this year. I just have a couple questions about the areas we've picked. Thanks

If it were me, I'd be looking for the leftover list anyday from CO! U could prolly pick up a decent 1st season elk rifle on possibly a reissued tag. I know I turned in my tag back in and it was 1st season elk

Also check out Bearpaw if you go to the Selway. Selway has OTC rifle tags right now but not sure how long they will last. If you decide on Selway maybe let me know. I'm thinking maybe Selway or Lolo In Idaho but have not ruled out Colorado yet.
