My nephew's best friend, who has often fished with us for fall chinooks, has drawn the single premium elk tag for the Sled Springs unit (firearm hunt from September 1 to November 30). They will obviously be timing their hunt to hunt the rut with a rifle. I have not hunted the unit but have been gathering information over the years that I have fed to him. If you have any ideas for his hunt, I would be glad to relay them to him. He may have access to horses otherwise they will likely bike in. He's in his early 30s, and a really great guy. Feel free to PM me.

I was just over there on my spring bear hunt for 11 days,,,saw lots of elk on the timber company lands more than on nat forest lands.you can check out the shamrock, norregard, and whisky creek, green road only travel maps and areas.that should be a good hunt for a nice bull.

Having hunted that unit multiple times during Sept. archery I'd shoot the first 340 bull I saw. There are some bigger, but 320-330 is a very good bull for that unit. Most are in the 280 range. I shot a 330 bull last year in there and it was the biggest bull I saw in 2 weeks of hunting and did not see or hear of any bigger shot. The shut down of camping on Noregard during Sept. has really ruined the hunt, at least for us. We would stay a week at a time way back by the river. I'm done with the unit now.
