I drew this tag this year and I am pumped to be able to take my 300 RUM out during the rut. I have hunted this unit before, mostly above the town of Juntura and we have seen some great bucks there. I got a decent 4x3 last year. I was wondering if anyone has had some experience in that area during November? Thoughts on wintering grounds and what not. Any thoughts/advice are much appreciated!

Congrats. I assume you mean south of Juntura? You'd be well served to contact the local biologist, you will want to find out where the does are during the rut and the Bucks will follow. I've seen some good ones in the rough semi open country there and a few in the more mountainous sheep like country a bit further south and a little west. But I'd not write off the forested part to the north, there could be some good ones show up to rut the does, more deer to the north I believe. Good luck.

This can be a great tag if you get snow up high. Odfw has been doing some migration studies lately you might want to have a sit down meeting with the bio for this area. There are some big bucks in the trees.

I've hunted elk south of Juntura in the High Dessert area, if memory serves the deer hunt is earlier. We saw a few very nice bucks. Good luck to you!

Congratulations, that should be a great tag! I agree, find the does, sit back and glass, you will find a good buck. I look forward to the story and pics!

Great idea to talk to a biologist, thanks!

Yes, the regular season is usually the first two weekends in Oct. This special tag allows me to hunt in November, which is when the rut is.

I can't remember the site but there was a guy that would take a ton of pics in the Malheur unit during November. He would post pics of some huge mule deer. Lots of pics of 180 plus bucks. I'll see if I can find some of his threads and send you a link.

I have antelope hunted malheur unit twice, both times south of Juntura and ran into some really nice bucks in summer mode but I dont know much about the winter habits. I do know that south of Juntura up the Shumway grade there is a ranch out by Creston with hay fields and mostly BLM surrounding it. I would be glassing those hayfields in the morning and then when the deer head out the sagebrush just keep track of where they go.

The biggest buck I have ever seen in my life was standing on the edge of the highway just a few miles west of Juntura. It was with a group of 6 bucks, all were big. This one towered above the rest. I have seen several big ones just west of Juntura, but only when in the velvet. Do your research right and I think you may just get the opportunity for a buck of your lifetime.

I think I know where you are talking about. That is the area we typically hunt during the regualr season. I am hoping they stay around that area into November. Thanks!
