Thanks for the welcome guys.

@ttt I hear ya about having the knowledge about the area for the future. It would be much nicer going into that area with some good knowledge of the area AND one of the coveted bull tags, sometime in the future that is. It's just tough to make the decision to purch the tag knowing that's the only area I'll be able to hunt elk this year.

@TS Yea, born and raised in C.O. but honestly I haven't done a lot of archery elk hunting. Always just chased deer around and really didn't even get serious about that until a few years ago. I know there are a lot of opportunities closer than Wenaha, which is why i'm a little hesitant to buy the tag and limit myself to just that unit! But I think it's def a unit to wait for!

My uncle and I drew a Malhuer River buck tag. I don't know anything about the area, so any help would be appreciated.
Congrats to everyone else.

Thanks,

Congratulations to everyone who drew! While I struck out for nonresident tags, I drew an East Whitehorse buck tag, a High Desert rifle elk tag and my Warner #1 antelope! The wife drew the same buck tag, and a second choice Tioga #2 bull tag. Now if gas prices would just go down...

Good luck! Looks like alot of time in the desert for you in the fall! I know what you mean about fuel prices, makes me almost glad I didn't draw any out of state tags, key word, almost.

That should be some fun hunting this year.

I live in the Willamette valley also. We take pictures of deer in our yards, but we drive for 6 1/2 hrs to hunt them in the desert. Now I even drive over there to fish, instead of driving 30 minutes from my house. The vastness and the solitude is truly addicting to me. That is the only reason I can think of.

Happy scouting and hunting !!

I love the valley/coast for steelhead & seafood and definitely find myself driving that way a lot once the fish start running. But you're right there is something about the desert. I'm definitely trying to hunt opportunities close to home this year just so I can spend as much time in the field as possible.

Hey Timberstalker,

Ya that is pretty much my backyard. Grew up in Ontario,OR. So I have a few spots set aside to try and find a couple of big bucks. Found out my wife's best friend also drew the tag so I am sure I will be the last to pull the trigger. I would love to see both of these girls punch there tags on some good quality 4x4's but we will see. I will keep you posted on activity. Just found out that unit is on fire, but its mainly in the owyhee reservoir area, its roughly 10,000 acres at the moment with 0% contained. The fire started 7/1/13 in the afternoon.
