I'll be hunting Wyoming next month so which map chip should I go with: Wyoming only chip for $100 or the Northern Rockies regional chip that includes ID, WY, and MT also for $100. There looks to be greater detail with the WY only chip, but it might be not helpful or necessary for public land hunting. Anybody have any experience with the regional chip?

I've heard the only difference is the land owner names are listed on the state chip. I know there are other threads on this so hopefully someone will chime in to assist.

We talking chips for a GPS ? I'd sure want the landowner names. I personally use my phone in GPS mode and download the overlays. works like a champ and one less thing to carry.

It all depends on how much detail you need or want. If all you need is the private land boundaries then the regional chip will work. If you want to know who to contact for access then you'll need the state chip.

I think the regional chips are missing alot more details then just landowner names. Im not sure exactly what is different. I have the state chips. I want the best info I can get while hunting.

Get the state chip, especially if there is private timber companies, private with access etc.. Otherwise you can't tell what you can hunt or not, due to it all being white with no detail separating the usable and the no trespassing areas.

I have the regional chip for NV an CA as well as the single chip for UT. Since NV is my home state it gets used every weekend. The amount of detail to me is ridiculous, shows roads that no longer exist, water ponds, guzzlers, more detail than I can use. The only difference I see from the UT only chip is the landowner name.

I went with the app this year. My GPS is getting older and outdated, can't get the good chips for it. I got my home state and Wyoming so I can learn to run it around home, then use it out west. From my scouting trip I can tell you it's good to download the maps and run the phone in airplane mode if you don't have great signal or a way to keep the battery charged. I ran it on my I pad mostly for the bigger screen scouting, but will use the phone when hunting. I carry a Goal Zero Venture 30 I can charge the phone or my flashlight from in my pack.

I've also got the phone app, state specific, and while I thought $30 per year was high initialy, I don't see me being without this thing in the future.
