Hello my name is Paul. Age 60 and I just strated hunting. WOW. I've been a saltwater fisherman all my life then all of a sudden, BANG, I gotta go hunting.
I live in Napa CA. Had my first hunt last month in Paso Robles CA for a boar. 130 yards out, it was a perfect text book shot to the heart. I am one lucky rookie. Weekly practice for two months at the range helped too. I've cleaned lots of big tuna and other fish but this was the first time I've every gutted and skinned an animal. I loved it guys.
Next on the list - a deer. I'm finding this to be a big leap and a big learning curve. From reading and watching YT videos I've picked up some pointers and ideas for gear. So far I've purchased a Tenzing 2220 pack, Danner Ridgeway boots, meat sacks and a hoist plus a spotter. I've got pleanty of knives. I know I should have a good GPS, binoculars and rangefinder. Not sure which brand to purchase. HELP! So now I'm at a stalemate guys. What other gear should I pack for day hunting? I have a PLB (personal locator beacon) Its a marine device that sends a satilite signal for emergency support. Should I carry this? And the biggest of all is "Where to hunt"? MORE HELP! Also, what are some good camo's to purchase. Our local weather in Sept-Oct is 45F in the AM to 85F in the PM. BTW, I'm hiking hills every weekend to get in shape for this. Haven't put but 10 pounds in the pack so far. I'm old enought to know to start light.
Finally, I want to shoot birds too. Phesant, turkey and/or doves. I have no clue on this topic. But that's later.
Hello all. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
